Welcome

My name is James Connolly, and I am a published aviation and long-exposure photographer based in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Although originally from South Devon, I am currently studying journalism at the University of Portsmouth, where I have been able to combine my passion for both photography and writing.

I first became a photographer at the age of fifteen, after purchasing a Digital SLR camera with the limited budget I had. I soon began to develop my skills, becoming inspired by local landscape photographers Rich Walker and Darren Blight. I began to combine my interest in photography with writing when I became involved in reporting on sporting events for the local newspaper. This was a challenging, yet exciting opportunity, which provided me with my first taste of professional journalism.

Since then, I have had work published in other various magazines and newspapers, including a recent photograph of HMS Queen Elizabeth departing Portsmouth, which was printed in The News. I currently produce feature articles for This Is Flight – an online publication which provides global aviation coverage for enthusiasts.

I am often found exploring Portsmouth with a camera in one hand, and a tripod in the other, looking for new locations to capture. I believe that photography is a great method of relaxation, as it allows me to escape the chaos and pressures of student life. It is my ambition to eventually become a professional photojournalist, capturing images and producing articles for publications such as National Geographic and Digital Photographer Magazine.

Thank you for visiting my website, and I hope you enjoy my work. Please remember to leave a comment and ask any questions that you have!
